Public sector union ADEDY decided on Monday to launch a 24-hour strike to support secondary education teachers who will be forced to work with civil mobilization orders. However, ADEDY and teachers’ union OLME disagreed on the day of the strike. OLME wanted ADEDY to launch the strike together with the teachers on upcoming Friday. However ADEDY argued it did not want to disrupt the students’ university entrance exams.
Private sector union GSEE will join forces with ADEDY however after noon time with a work stoppage.
Secondary education teachers threatened to strike during the university entrance exams due opposing the Education ministry decisions for compulsory transfer of teachers and raise of working hours that would lead 10,000 hourly working teachers to lose their jobs.
On Monday, the ministry withdrew the presidential decree for the compulsory transfer. OLME hold a meeting today to take decisions after this development.
Last weekend, prime minister Antonis Samaras signed the decision to issue civil mobilization orders for 86,000 teachers even before the start of the strike.
